Ms. Colón is the founder and principal of Sonia Colón Law Offices, P.A., a law firm specializing in bankruptcy, commercial and corporate law, business litigation, and creditor’s rights, serving clients in Florida and Puerto Rico, based in Orlando, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico. She worked for O’Neill & Borges, McConnell Valdés and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico, and as a partner at O’Neill & Borges, she was member of the bankruptcy practice group.
Ms. Colón is a member of the Florida and the Puerto Rico bars. She is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Supreme Courts of Florida and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First and Eleventh Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida and the District of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Court of International Trade. She has more than 13 years of experience representing clients in commercial disputes a litigation. Clients include individuals, corporations, governmental agencies in need of expertise in insolvency matters, including bankruptcy, workouts, and reorganizations of financially distressed business.
Ms. Colón is also certified in business bankruptcies by the American Board of Certification, accredited by the Florida Bar. Ms. Colón has practiced extensively before the federal and state courts, primarily in the area of commercial litigation, including creditor’s rights and bankruptcy, collection actions, breach of contracts, construction law, and bond claims, for financial institutions, bonding and insurance companies, shopping center owners, and manufacturing companies. Ms. Colón has represented clients in numerous bankruptcy cases, including out-of-court restructurings and all aspects of complex litigation involving, among other things, cram-downs and valuation, dischargeability, fraudulent transfers, preference actions, consolidations, superpriority lending, and adequate protection. She has also negotiated and prepared documents for complex and diverse types of commercial transactions including (i) acquiring assets from debtors-in-possession and Chapter 7 trustees; (ii) securing diverse types of financing agreements; and (iii) creating and administering litigation trusts to ensure that the distribution to creditors is maximized.
With her experience in complex matters combined with language capabilities and cultural understanding, Ms. Colón has effectively provided legal services to clients in Florida and Puerto Rico. Ms. Colón is fluent in Spanish and English, and has working knowledge of Portuguese.
Ms. Colón holds a Bachelor of Science from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Services, wherein she graduated Cum Laude, and law degree from University of Puerto Rico School of Law, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She also studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) Program. Ms. Colón is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Commercial Law League of America, the Puerto Rico Bar Association; the Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers; and the Central Florida Bankruptcy Law Association.
